The Yukon.

From Whitehorse the Alaska Highway continues north-west to Fairbanks, but just a few kliks out of town I turned north onto the Klondike Highway towards Dawson City.

North of Carmacks (where I stopped for breakfast) I crossed the Yukon River.

Steamboats and paddlewheelers fueled with wood plied the Yukon as far as Dawson City during the gold rush.

There are rivers and creeks everywhere!

About 40 miles before Dawson City where the highway meets the Klondike River is the start of the Dempster Highway. Here I am crossing the river.

The Dempster is about 770K kilometers of good gravel.

The first 250 kilometers are stunningly beautiful.

I came around a corner and a grizzly (I think it's a grizzly) was standing in the middle of the road looking at me. I hit the brakes, grabbed my camera and jumped out of the truck. Just then a camper came around the corner ahead of me. The bear dropped to all 4s and headed into the trees. I managed to catch him on his way up the scree.
