Snow!

Olympia, WA

January 16th - 23rd (and counting)

It all started with an inch or two of snow around Martin Luther King Day.

Hunter-gatherer woman returns home with her loot!

The gazebo got a dusting.

After a couple more days of light snow, we went for a walk/sled ride over to our friend Elise's house.

Morgan and her friend Lucy happily played together in the snow.

Morgan loved Lucy's rainbow umbrella and many photos were taken.

When Elise gave us the adorable pink snowsuit, things got ridiculously cute.

As the snowfall began to really pick up the following day, Cynthia and Morgan built a snowman in out front yard.

Overnight, eleven inches of snow dropped, covering everything in a thick blanket and shutting down the city (we're just not used to this).
Despite the lack of cross-members in the truss system, the gazebo roof survived (aw yeah...)

Good times.

Then, things got pretty nasty and dangerous when the snow changed to ice on Thursday morning
A thick crust of ice formed on the soft snow and trees began to freeze and snap.

This is a photo of the street in front of our house, facing South.
The trees everywhere were heavily laden with ice and began bowing down, blocking roads, and breaking.
About 400,000 people lost power that day. Some of them are without electricy as of this post, about six days later.
It's really been quite a ferocious storm, and it has made national news.
Roads, highways, bridges, and airports have been closed and a lot of people without power have been moving into shelters to stay warm.

We were fortunate to have lost power for only half a day.
We were also lucky to have our big ol' mountain machine (the Jeep), which kept us somewhat mobile over the next few days after the snow turned into rain.

Currently, the rain is pouring down and temperatures are in the mid-40s during the day.
Rivers are swollen and overtopping their banks. Our sump pump is working overtime, rapidly turning the backyard into a slushy swampland!

I hope this post finds you all warm, cozy, and safe.
