Hawaii!

Cynthia and I spent ten days in Hawaii in mid-May.
Cynthia lived on the Big Island years ago, and has been anxious to get back ever since.
I can see why. Hawaii is a magical land and the most geographically isolated place on Earth
It is a land of extremes.
Placid and fierce,
fiery and aquatic,
mauka and makai!

The Big Island

Cynthia's tropical smile was out as soon as we arrived!

It's tough to look like a bad-ass with that mask on, but I did my best.

I went on my first tropical water dive.

Fun with the underwater camera.

Cynthia snorkeled around in the warm sun.

Black rock (basalt) and white sand (coral) beaches.

Serious tropical beauty. Hilo's Whatcom Falls Park.

The abundant rainfall on the Northeast side of the island flows into natural fissures, encounters volcanically heated rock, evaporates, and rises back up to the surface.
The steam vents to the surface in these natural saunas, formed from rocks shaped like teepees!
We had the whole place to ourselves.

There's a new vent on the big island that is causing air quality problems.

I had to check out the power of Pele. Wow.

Tropical shadow-casting.

Cynthia really loves Hawaii.
A land of stark contrasts.

More of that great smile.

Maui

We flew over to Maui for a few days, in order to see the Davis clan, and to experience some of Maui's beautiful swimming beaches.
We went to the Ocean Center on Maui together.
We saw sharks, rays, seahorses, eels, etc.
A good time was had by all.
We found a great beach the following day.
The kids could hang out in the shade on the shore, or play in the calm shallow water.
...while some of the adults went out to deeper waters in search of adventure.
Nick and I were fortunate enough to see a family of honu (turtles) out in the deep water.

Unlike Cynthia and I, Lindsay and Abe were married on warm and sunny beach!
The ceremony was beautiful and the love was as warm as the sunshine.

All in all, a wonderful time and a romantic get-away for Cynthia and I.
